Blog Post #5 Initial music video ideas

My partner and I were sure to produce a concept music video which brought me to think about 007 theme songs such as ‘No Time To Die’ and ‘Skyfall’.

‘No Time To Die’ is the theme song of 2021 ‘No Time To Die’ James Bond film sang by Billie Eilish, the original music video is a combination of performance and narrative style music video, achieved by cutting in between Billie EiIlish singing and footage from the film as well as combining both imageries through split screen. We thought the iconic rhythm and use of string instruments would complement some of our rough ideas for the music video and create a very dramatic effect. We were thinking of filming at the great wall using a drone and create a range of dynamics between proxemics and space: to have the character in a limited and minimal space as well as a large area to illustrate a sense of claustrophobia and suffocation but also the loneliness and how tiny one may feel in a world so vast and populated.

‘Skyfall’ is from the 2012 James Bond film ‘Skyfall’ by Adele, the original music video is a lyrics video of the title sequence. My partner and I really liked the combination of vocals and instrumental sections which would give us a bigger creative space to work on the contrasts of content and imagery as well as symbolism. For example: there could be a black and white filter and long shots during the vocals with minimal mise en scène to create contrast with the information from the lyrics, therefore symbolize solitude which suits James Bond as he can’t truly trust anyone, special agent is a lonely job. Whereas, during the instrumental sections, there would be more action or symbols created by props and abstract filters to represent the complex past and emotional turmoil James Bond but also people go through, everyone has a hidden past and is more complicated than we expect.

However, we decided not to use these songs for three reasons:

-The theme of songs weren’t ideal

The lyrics are very much about love which wasn’t our target, we wanted to focus more on the human mind and identity.

-The lengths of the songs were too long

‘No Time To Die’ was 4 minutes 2 seconds long and ‘Skyfall’ was even longer—4 minutes 46 seconds long

Despite the range of ideas we had and how much we wanted to demonstrate them, we decided that quality was more important than quantity and it would be more realistic and better to choose a song that was shorter.

-It was rather tricky for us to not consider about the film and hard to decide whether we should draw references to the film in the music video, whether that would be limiting or engaging.

In the end, we decided to research the artist Billie Eillish in detail because she produces a range of music genre over the years and especially in her new album ‘Happier Than Ever’. After considering a range of choices, I thought the song ‘GOLDWING’ was interesting to look at and the theme in particular suits our initial ideas about the message. As a postmodern society, we are able to generate our own interpretations of the text and the central concept of identity, self-worth in relation to society was fascinating to read. Furthermore, the combination of church hymn and techno was very abstract and conceptual itself. We planned to also create a shift in tones and styles in terms of mise en scène (costume, makeup, location), editing style and camera movements.
