Blog Post #11 Process of creating the digipak

Final version of GOLDWING Digipak

First draft of GOLDWING digipak

Initially, Arina and I created the design of the disk in the digipak together. We decided to take in a design I created based on photos taken of me when we were filming the 'souvenir' section in GOLDWING at Ikea:

We then went off to design individually the rest of the digipak (front & back cover, inside left & right).

I took a screenshot from one of our footage for GOLDWING where I hold two glass balls making reference to the Gothic fairytale 'Pan's Labyrinth' symbolizing moral vision and greed for power.

I adjusted the color grading and added a black & white filter.

However, we both decided that we didn't like the disc at all and designed our own versions of the GOLDWING digipak.

I decided to take a montage route (as below) inspired by the ending credits of the film 'Amsterdam'.

Cutting out Arina's face and giving the sides a wavy, melted feeling like a mask.

I really liked the effect called 'the cut' which gave the picture a woven texture and she spiky trims around the sides.

Experimenting with color tones

When experimenting color tones for my 'mask' I had to simultaneously consider the color contrast between my character and Arina's character as well as whether the colors look appealing together.

I decided to go with a red tone connoting a more passionate and dangerous feeling for Arina's character.

In contrast, for my character I went with a cold blue tone with thin lines of red to highlight the underlying potentials and traces of my character being dangerous, similarly Arina's character has more blended patches of dark blue symbolizing a more blended, developed species of her kind which is shown in the music video as she guides my character to accept her other side.

I wanted to reinforce the influences both characters have on each other so I added reflections of the other onto their eyes, fully acknowledging their presence within each other.
